“I honestly wouldn’t know gabardine from polyester. I just like the sound of the word. Anyway it’s not a song about textiles. It’s about mixed emotions and confused feelings. So it’s appropriate that the recording of Gabardine was mixed up and confused. I recorded the guitar on a 4-track cassette in Spokane in 1998 in Mike Corrigan’s messy basement, with Mike on drums. Marcus Hart digitally recorded the bass line in his messy duplex in Missoula in 2007. And I digitally recorded the vocals and tambourine in my messy apartment in Spokane in 2007. We can only imagine what this sloppy song would sound like if any of us had any housekeeping skills.”
